How trip modification fees are calculated

When you change the dates of a confirmed booking, a small modification fee applies in certain cases. This article explains when it applies, how much it is, and why it exists.

When the fee applies

Only when both are true:

  1. You're outside the free-cancellation window (within 24 hours of pickup).

  2. Your change moves the pickup later.

When it doesn't apply

  • Changes inside the free-cancellation window (more than 24 hours before pickup), always free.

  • Pulling pickup earlier, always free.

  • Extending only the return time (pickup unchanged) - not covered by the fee, since the pickup time is the same.

How the fee is structured

Trip duration

Modification fee

For reference: cancellation fee

Up to 2 days

¼ of the average daily price

½ of the average daily price

More than 2 days

½ of the average daily price

1 average day's price

The modification fee is always half of the equivalent cancellation fee. In other words: changing dates outside the window costs half what cancelling would.

Examples

Example 1: 2-day trip at €40/day
You're 12 hours before pickup and want to move pickup 1 day later.
Modification fee: ¼ × €40 = €10.

Example 2: 5-day trip at €50/day
You're 6 hours before pickup and move pickup 3 days later.
Modification fee: ½ × €50 = €25.

Example 3: 2-day trip at €40/day (pulling earlier)
You're 12 hours before pickup and want to start 1 day earlier.
Modification fee: €0. Pulling earlier is always free.

The fee is non-refundable

  • Not refunded if you later cancel.

  • Not refunded if you complete the trip normally.

  • If after the modification you cancel outside the new free-cancellation window, a cancellation fee will also apply on top.

How the charge is made

The fee is charged immediately upon confirming the change - to the same card you used for the booking. The confirmation screen shows you the exact amount and the last 4 digits of the card before you're charged.

Extenuating circumstances

If you have to change dates due to documented circumstances (flight delay, illness, natural disaster, jury summons, etc.) and have appropriate evidence, we may waive the fee. Contact Support via in-app chat with the supporting documents. See the Emergency Policy.

Why this fee exists

Sync charges a modification fee for late date changes to protect hosts from last-minute changes that block their car and prevent them from renting it to someone else. It's a fairness mechanism, not a revenue line for the platform.
