How to add an additional driver to a booking — step by step

This guide shows you exactly what to tap at each step, and what confirmation you'll see so you know the driver was added.

Before you start: the person you want to add needs their own Sync account with identity verification completed. If they don't have both, the add won't go through. Here's how you'll know.

What needs to be true first

To add someone as an additional driver, that person must:

  1. Have a Sync account. They can sign up at thesync.com or in the Sync app for iOS and Android.

  2. Have completed identity verification. They need to verify their driver's license through Veriff, from their own account. See here how they can do it.

Both have to be done before you try to add them. It only takes a few minutes, so if they're not ready yet, ask them to do it first.

Step by step

  1. Open Trip Details: Go to your booking in the app and open the Trip Details page.

  2. Tap "Add Drivers"" You'll find it in the side bar, or as "Add Driver" inside the Additional Drivers section.

  3. Read the short reminder and tap Continue: A reminder of the requirements (account + verification) appears. You'll see it every time you add a driver, not just the first time. Tap Continue.

  4. Enter the driver's email: Type the email address linked to that person's Sync account. It has to be exactly the email on their account, otherwise they won't be found.

  5. Tap "Add Driver": Sync immediately checks that the driver meets the requirements for this vehicle (verification, age, license validity).

Confirmation: the driver shows up right away in your Additional Drivers list. They also get an email and a push notification telling them they've been added to the trip. That list is your proof it worked.

If a check doesn't pass, the add won't complete and you'll see a message explaining why. The common ones are below.

When can I add or remove drivers?

You can add or remove additional drivers while your booking is Booked or Active. So you can add someone even after the trip has started.

Once the trip ends, the Additional Drivers section stays visible as history but no longer accepts changes.

How to remove a driver

On the Trip Details page, find the driver in the Additional Drivers section and tap the remove icon next to their name. You'll be asked to confirm. Once you do, the driver is removed and gets notified.

If you see an error message

These are the most common messages when an add doesn't go through, and what each one means:

"No Sync account found with this email"

They haven't signed up yet, or you typed the wrong email. Ask them to create an account at thesync.com.

"This user hasn't verified their driver's license yet"

They have an account but haven't finished identity verification through Veriff.

"The driver's license expires before the trip ends"

Their license expires before the booking's return date.

"This user doesn't meet the age requirement for this vehicle"

Some vehicles have a minimum driver age set by the host.

"This driver is already added to this trip"

They're already on your additional drivers list.

"You've reached the maximum of 3 additional drivers"

You're at the limit. Remove someone first if you need to swap them out.

Good to know

  • Up to 3 additional drivers per trip.

  • No extra charge. Additional drivers are included for free.

  • Covered by your protection plan. Every additional driver is on the same protection plan as you, automatically.

  • Vehicle change. If your booking changes to a different vehicle, additional drivers don't carry over on their own. You'll need to add them again to the new booking.
