A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Arta city is flat and easy. The surrounding area is a mix of flat Ambracian Gulf plain to the west and increasingly hilly terrain to the north toward Ioannina and east toward Karditsa. Key distances: Preveza 40km west, about 40 minutes on a good flat road. Ioannina 75km north, about 1 hour via the E951 road through the Epirus hills. Karditsa 70km east, about 1 hour on local roads through the plain. Parga 90km northwest via Preveza, about 1.5 hours. The Ambracian Gulf wetlands south of Arta are accessible on flat local roads. In all directions the roads are paved and manageable for a standard car.
No tolls on the roads immediately around Arta. If you're driving from Athens on the Ionian Motorway (E55/A5), tolls apply from the Antirrio bridge northward: expect around €15-18 total from Athens to the Arta area including the Rio-Antirrio bridge toll (€13.50 for cars). From Preveza or Ioannina on local roads, no tolls.
Good fuel availability in Arta. Unleaded 95 around €1.88-2.02/litre. No fuel concerns for day trips to Preveza, Ioannina, or the Ambracian Gulf area. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Arta city center has paid and free street parking. Around the main square and near the Parigoritissa church, paid parking at around €0.80-1/hour. Free parking is easy a short walk from the center. The old town kastro area has informal free parking nearby. At the Arta Bridge, there is a small free car park on the riverbank. Parking around the Ambracian Gulf wetland areas is informal and free.
Arta has no ferry port. The nearest ferry connection is Preveza, 40km west, which links to the Aktio-Preveza undersea tunnel rather than operating car ferries directly. For international ferry routes, the nearest port is Igoumenitsa (about 130km northwest) with connections to Italy and Corfu, or Patras (about 2.5 hours south via the Ionian Motorway) for Italy and Ionian island routes. You can take your Sync car on any ferry from these ports and travel anywhere in Greece or internationally.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address in the city. Arta has no commercial airport. The nearest is Preveza/Aktion (PVK), about 50km west: your host can arrange pickup there, or you can travel to Arta and receive the car at your accommodation. If you're arriving by bus (Arta has a central KTEL station with connections to Athens, Ioannina, and Preveza), your host can meet you there. Agree on the exact time and location when you book.
