A valid EU driving licence is all you need. Non-EU visitors can use their home licence for up to 6 months. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Traffic police checkpoints are common on Crete's main roads in summer. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
The E75 motorway connecting Chania to Heraklion is fast and well-maintained. West of Chania toward Kissamos, the road narrows but stays manageable. South toward Sfakia and the Samaria Gorge, roads get winding and steep in places. All are fine with a standard car. The road to Balos beach requires a rough track for the last 9km. A regular car can do it slowly, but a higher-clearance vehicle is more comfortable. Elafonisi is reached on a paved road with no issues.
No tolls anywhere in Crete. Drive freely across the island with no toll booths, including on the main E75 motorway.
Petrol stations are easy to find in Chania and along the E75. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.85-2.10/litre. Once you head south toward Sfakia or west past Kissamos, stations get sparse. Fill up in Chania before heading to Samaria, Elafonisi, or Balos. Some rural stations close on Sundays. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
The old Venetian harbour area has very limited parking. Use the paid lots on the edge of the old town (around €1.50-2/hour) rather than trying to squeeze into the narrow streets. In July and August, arrive before 9am if you want a spot near the waterfront. At Elafonisi and Balos, beach parking fills by 10am in peak summer. Both have large lots that charge around €3-5/day, but they're full early. Plan accordingly or stay overnight nearby.
Chania uses the port of Souda, 7km east of the city. Daily overnight ferries connect to Piraeus (Athens) in about 8-9 hours. It's one of the most reliable routes in Greece, running year-round. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Book car spaces in advance for summer crossings. The Souda port is a 10-minute drive from Chania city center.
Most Sync hosts in Chania deliver to your hotel, villa, or any address in the city. If you're flying in, you can arrange pickup at Chania Airport (CHQ, also called Daskalogiannis Airport) right after landing. Agree on the time and exact address when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
