Tips for renting and driving in Syros
Licence requirements
A valid EU driving licence is all you need. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Road conditions
Syros is small and easy to navigate. Hermoupolis to Galissas on the west coast is 8km, about 15 minutes. Hermoupolis to Kini in the northwest is 9km, about 15 minutes. Hermoupolis to Megas Gialos in the south is 12km, about 20 minutes. Roads are paved throughout but get narrow heading into hillside villages like Ano Syros, where cars really can't enter the top streets. The road to Grammata bay in the north involves a rough track for the last 2-3km: manageable but slow. All main beach roads are fine for a standard car.

No toll roads on Syros. Drive anywhere on the island for free.
Fuel
A couple of petrol stations in Hermoupolis cover the island's needs. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.90-2.15/litre. The island is small enough that you won't run low between fill-ups. Fill up in Hermoupolis before any long loop. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Parking
Hermoupolis has free street parking on most roads around the port and the main squares. The neoclassical center is walkable: park near Miaouli Square and explore on foot. Ano Syros, the medieval Catholic hilltop settlement, is best reached by car to the lower edge and then walked. Beach parking across the island is free and informal. Galissas, Kini, and Finikas are the busiest beaches and fill early on weekends in summer.
Ferries
Hermoupolis is the ferry hub of the Cyclades. Almost every ferry route in the Cyclades passes through Syros. Daily connections to Piraeus (2-4 hours depending on the boat), Mykonos (1 hour), Paros (1 hour), Naxos (1.5 hours), Tinos (30 minutes), and Andros. Several times a week to Santorini, Ios, Milos, and other Cyclades. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Syros is one of the easiest islands to reach and leave by ferry. Book car spaces in advance for summer crossings on the Piraeus route.
