Tips for renting and driving in Piraeus
Licence requirements
To rent in Piraeus you need a valid driving licence. EU licences are accepted as they are. Non-EU licences are valid for stays of up to 6 months; if your licence isn't in the Latin alphabet, you'll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). Minimum age is 21 with most hosts, though some ask for 23 to 25 for larger or more expensive models. At pickup you'll need your licence, an ID or passport, and the payment method you used for the booking. Each host's terms are shown on the car's page before you book, so there are no surprises at handover.
Road conditions
Piraeus's main arteries, Grigoriou Lampraki, Iroon Polytechniou and Pireos avenue toward Athens, are in good condition. Kastella and Peiraiki have narrow one-way streets and steep climbs, while traffic around the port gates peaks on summer mornings and Friday evenings when the ferries depart. Expect heavy truck traffic toward Keratsini and Perama. GPS is essential in the one-way maze, and allow double the travel time at rush hours, 8 to 10 in the morning and 6 to 8 in the evening.
Tolls
There are no tolls within Piraeus or on the way to central Athens. If you head to the airport via Attiki Odos, each section costs about €2.80, payable in cash or by transponder. Toward Corinth and the Peloponnese you'll meet toll stations on the national road, charged per station. For trips down the Athens Riviera, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Sounio, the coastal road is toll-free the whole way.
Fuel
Fuel stations are everywhere in Piraeus, with several 24-hour ones on Pireos and Grigoriou Lampraki avenues. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.80 to €2.10 per liter, usually cheaper toward Nikaia and Keratsini and pricier near the port. If you rent an electric or hybrid, agree on charging and the return policy with your host in advance, so you know where and how you'll charge.
Parking
Parking is the hard part of Piraeus. Around the port and Pasalimani free spots are scarce and the center has controlled parking. Private lots near the gates charge about €8 to €10 per day. Kastella and Freattyda get difficult in the evenings because of the tavernas, while Nikaia and Korydallos are much easier. Ferries
Piraeus is the country's largest port and the gateway to the Cyclades, Crete, the Dodecanese and the Saronic islands. Gates E1 to E12 serve different destinations, so check your ticket before setting off. If you plan to take the car on the ferry, agree it with your host before booking, most allow it by arrangement, and make sure you're at the gate at least an hour before departure.
