A Focus diesel is one of the more comfortable ways to cover long Greek distances, and the 1.5 EcoBlue is economical enough that Athens to Ioannina barely registers as a fuel cost. Daily prices sit in the mainstream middle. The 1.0 EcoBoost petrol is the common engine and returns around 6 litres per 100km in mixed driving, while the diesels drop under 5 on the open road. Parts and independent servicing are widely available in Greece. The EcoBoost is a small turbocharged engine that likes to be warmed up properly before you work it hard, which is worth knowing on a cold morning start.
The driving position and the pedals are better judged than in most rivals, which is the sort of thing you stop noticing precisely because it is right. SYNC 3 on cars from about 2017 onwards is quick and supports CarPlay and Android Auto. Seats are supportive without being firm, and the suspension is the real selling point: it takes the edge off a pothole without the car feeling loose afterwards.
Ford sells the same model with very different engines, and the gap between a 1.0 EcoBoost Focus and a 1.5 diesel is a different week in fuel stops and motorway ease. Fiesta if the week is mostly city and one or two people. It parks more easily and costs less per day, and it is genuinely enjoyable on a twisty road. Focus if you have luggage, rear passengers or long drives: the boot is far bigger, the rear seat is usable by adults, and it is noticeably quieter and more settled at motorway speed.
Better than most at the price. Ford tunes its suspension to absorb sharp bumps rather than to feel sporty in a showroom, so patched asphalt and speed bumps are handled well without the car feeling floaty afterwards. A Citroen is softer still, but the Ford keeps more composure on a mountain road while giving up little comfort.
Stronger than a one-litre engine sounds, because it is turbocharged, and perfectly capable of motorway speeds with four people aboard. It does use more fuel than the official figures suggest when you drive it hard, and like any small turbo engine it prefers to be warm before you ask much of it. For a mostly city week it is the sensible choice over a diesel.
No, and that is mostly to its credit. It is a Fiesta underneath with a taller body, so it drives better than almost any small crossover and has a clever deep boot compartment. What it does not have is four-wheel drive or meaningful ground clearance. If you need to climb a gravel track, look at a Suzuki with AllGrip or a 4x4 Jeep instead.
