A valid EU driving licence is all you need. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Mykonos is small and most of the island is reachable within 20-25 minutes from Mykonos Town. The main roads are paved and signed. Super Paradise, Elia, and Kalafatis on the south and east coasts are all under 15km from town. The roads get narrow in a few spots, especially near the beaches in summer. Expect heavy scooter and ATV traffic. Mykonos Town itself has pedestrianised alleys: park on the edge and walk in. The road to Ano Mera (the only inland village) is the most straightforward drive on the island.
No toll roads on Mykonos. Drive freely across the island.
There are two petrol stations on Mykonos, both near Mykonos Town. Unleaded 95 runs around €2.00-2.30/litre, higher than most Greek islands due to logistics. Fill up in town before heading to the beaches. There are no stations elsewhere on the island. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Parking in Mykonos Town is very limited. Use the paid lot at Fabrika (the main bus station area), around €3-5/day. Don't attempt to drive into the old town: the alleys are genuinely impassable and there's nowhere to turn around. Beach parking is free but fills completely by 11am at popular spots in July and August. Super Paradise, Paraga, and Paradise beach have small lots that are full early. Elia and Kalafatis on the east coast tend to have more space. Ornos and Psarou are closest to town and always packed.
Mykonos has excellent ferry connections. From the New Port (about 2km north of Mykonos Town): daily fast ferries to Piraeus (2.5-3 hours) and Rafina (2-2.5 hours), plus connections to Paros (1.5 hours), Naxos (1 hour), Santorini (2.5 hours), and Syros (1 hour). You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Car spaces on Mykonos routes fill fast: book well in advance, especially for the Piraeus and Rafina crossings in summer. Check whether your ferry departs from the New Port or the Old Port before you go.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address on the island. If you're flying in, Mykonos Airport (JMK) is about 4km from Mykonos Town: you can arrange pickup there right after landing. If you're arriving by ferry, pickup at the New Port is easy to arrange. Agree on the time and address when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
