A valid EU driving licence works everywhere in Greece. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
The main road from Thessaloniki into Chalkidiki splits at Nea Moudania into two directions: left toward Kassandra (first leg) and right toward Sithonia (second leg). Both are well-paved. Kassandra has more resort-style development and heavier traffic in summer. Sithonia is greener, quieter, and the road hugging the coast has some of the best scenery in northern Greece. The third leg, Athos, ends at Ouranoupoli (the last point accessible by road). Beyond that, the peninsula is accessible only on foot or by boat, and only for male visitors with a special permit.
No tolls within Chalkidiki itself. The only toll you'll encounter is on the Thessaloniki ring road if you're driving in from the city: around €1.50-2.00 at the Nea Moudania junction area. Once you're on the peninsula, all roads are free.
Petrol stations are well distributed along the main road into Kassandra and Sithonia. Nea Moudania has several. Deeper into Sithonia and toward the tip of Kassandra, stations thin out. Fill up at Nea Moudania or Polygyros before heading far down either leg. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.85-2.10/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Most of Chalkidiki is resort and village-based, so parking is generally free and informal. Beach parking lots along Kassandra and Sithonia are free but fill fast in July and August. Arrive before 10am at popular beaches like Sani, Kallithea, and Porto Carras. Ouranoupoli, the gateway to Athos, has paid parking near the port in summer: around €5/day. If you're visiting for the day, arrive early as space is limited.
Chalkidiki doesn't have a major ferry port. The nearest connections are from Thessaloniki (45 minutes away), which runs seasonal ferries to the Northern Aegean islands including Limnos, Lesvos, and Chios. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. For island connections, drive to Thessaloniki port and board from there.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel, resort, or any address on the peninsula. If you're flying into Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), which is the closest airport at about 70km from Nea Moudania, you can arrange pickup there and drive directly into Chalkidiki. Agree on the time and address when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
