Tips for renting and driving in Mytilene
Licence requirements
A valid EU driving licence is all you need. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Road conditions
Lesvos is big: 90km from Mytilene in the southeast to Sigri in the far west. The main road north to Molyvos is 62km, about 1 hour. Roads in the center of the island are good. The west and southwest get more remote: narrower roads, less traffic, fewer signs in English. The petrified forest near Sigri is on the western tip, about 1.5 hours from Mytilene. The road is fine but long. Fill up before heading west: fuel stops are sparse past Kalloni.

No toll roads on Lesvos. Drive freely across the entire island.
Fuel
Several stations in Mytilene town. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.90-2.15/litre. Kalloni, roughly in the middle of the island, has a couple of stations and is the last reliable stop before heading west. Molyvos in the north has one station. If you're going to Sigri or the petrified forest, fill up in Kalloni. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Parking
Mytilene town has free street parking a few blocks back from the waterfront. The port area itself is limited. No paid parking zones on the island. In Molyvos, park in the free lot at the base of the castle hill and walk up into the village: the upper streets are too narrow for cars. Most beach areas have free informal parking. Petra, just south of Molyvos, has a large free car park near the beach.
Ferries
Mytilene port connects to Piraeus (Athens) with overnight ferries taking about 11-12 hours. There are also regular connections to Chios (2.5 hours), Thessaloniki, and summer routes to other Northern Aegean islands. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Book car spaces in advance for the Piraeus route in summer. The port is right in the center of Mytilene town, walkable from most hotels.
