A valid EU driving licence works everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Lefkada Town to Nidri on the east coast is 17km, about 20 minutes. Lefkada Town to Kathisma beach on the west coast is 14km, about 25 minutes. The west coast road south toward Porto Katsiki and Egremni is the most dramatic drive on the island: steep cliffs, hairpin bends, and white rock faces dropping to turquoise water. All paved, all manageable in a standard car. The road down to Porto Katsiki ends at a car park. From there it's 150 steps to the beach. Egremni requires a longer descent. Mountain villages like Karya and Englouvi are on narrow roads but worth it for the views.
No tolls on Lefkada. The floating bridge connecting the island to the mainland is free. If you're driving from Athens or Thessaloniki, you'll pass through toll booths on the Ionian Motorway (E55) on the mainland: expect around €8-12 depending on your entry point. Once you cross onto the island, no further tolls.
Several petrol stations in Lefkada Town. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.85-2.10/litre. Nidri on the east coast also has a station. The south of the island past Vassiliki has no stations: fill up in Lefkada Town or Nidri before heading to the west coast beaches or the southern tip. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Lefkada Town has free street parking and a large free lot near the causeway. The town center is compact and walkable once parked. At Porto Katsiki and Egremni, parking lots fill by 10am in July and August. Both charge around €3-5/day. At Kathisma, parking is free along the road but limited. Nidri and Vassiliki have free parking near the waterfront. Arrive early at any west coast beach in peak summer.
Lefkada is connected to the mainland by road, not ferry, so you drive on and off the island. From Nidri on the east coast, small ferries run to the nearby islands of Meganisi (20 minutes), Kalamos, and Kastos. Seasonal connections also run from Vassiliki to Kefalonia and Ithaca. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. The Nidri-Meganisi ferry takes cars. For Kefalonia and Ithaca from Vassiliki, check seasonal schedules as they vary by year.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address on the island. Lefkada has no airport: the nearest is Preveza/Aktion Airport (PVK), about 20 minutes away on the mainland. You can arrange pickup there and drive straight across the bridge onto the island. If you're driving from elsewhere in Greece, your host can meet you in Lefkada Town or your accommodation. Agree on the time and address when you book.
