A valid EU driving licence works everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Zakynthos Town to Laganas on the south coast is 10km, about 15 minutes. Zakynthos Town to the Navagio viewpoint in the northwest is 30km, about 40 minutes. The north of the island is hilly with winding roads and dramatic cliff views. All paved, all manageable for a standard car. The road to the Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) viewpoint ends at a clifftop car park: the beach itself is only accessible by boat. The Blue Caves are also boat-only. Porto Limnionas on the west coast has a narrow final approach but is reachable by car. The resort strip between Laganas and Kalamaki gets congested in the evening in peak season.
No tolls on Zakynthos. If you're driving from Athens to catch the ferry at Killini, you'll pass toll booths on the Ionian Motorway: expect around €5-8 depending on your entry point. Once on the island, all roads are free.
Several petrol stations in Zakynthos Town and along the main road south toward Laganas. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.90-2.10/litre. The northwest of the island past Volimes has fewer stations. Fill up in town before heading north toward Navagio or west toward Porto Limnionas. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Zakynthos Town has paid parking near the port and the main square, around €1-1.50/hour. Free street parking is available a few blocks back from the waterfront. The Navagio viewpoint car park is free but fills by 10am in summer. Laganas beach strip has free parking along the road but it's chaotic in August. Keri Caves viewpoint in the south has a small free lot. Porto Limnionas has limited informal parking at the end of the road.
The main ferry connection is from Killini on the Peloponnese mainland to Zakynthos port, taking about 1 hour. Several crossings daily. From Zakynthos you can also reach Kefalonia (Pesada to Agios Nikolaos, about 45 minutes) on a seasonal route. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Book car spaces in advance for summer crossings on the Killini route. The port is in the center of Zakynthos Town.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address on the island. If you're flying in, Zakynthos Airport (ZTH) is about 6km south of Zakynthos Town: pickup can be arranged there right after landing. If you're arriving by ferry from Killini, the port is in the center of town and port pickup is easy to arrange. Agree on the time and address when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
