Tips for renting and driving in Santorini

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Santorini is small: the drive from Fira to Oia in the north is 12km, about 20 minutes. Fira to Akrotiri in the south is 14km, about 20 minutes. Fira to Perissa beach in the southeast is 12km, about 20 minutes. All main roads are paved. The caldera-edge roads through Imerovigli and toward Oia are narrow in sections, with passing requiring care. The main north-south road (the spine of the island) is wider and easy. In July and August, the road into Oia can back up significantly in the 2 hours before sunset: plan for this or arrive early. The road down to Athinios port is a winding descent with hairpin turns, manageable but not fast. ATVs and scooters share the roads in large numbers; give them space.

Tolls

No tolls anywhere on Santorini. All island roads are free.

Fuel

Petrol stations are available in Fira, Messaria, and Kamari. Given the island's small size, you won't need much fuel for a day's driving. Unleaded 95 runs around €2.00-2.20/litre on the island, slightly higher than mainland prices. Fill up in Fira or Messaria before heading to remote areas. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Fira has parking lots on the edge of town, mostly free or cheap (around €2/day). Don't try to drive into the center of Fira itself: the streets are pedestrianised or too narrow. Park at the main lot near the cable car and walk 5 minutes into town. Oia: this is the hardest parking on the island. There's a large free car park at the entrance to Oia village (before the pedestrian zone begins). Arrive early in summer, especially on sunset evenings. The village itself is foot-traffic only. Akrotiri archaeological site has a free car park. Perissa and Perivolos beaches have free roadside parking. Kamari beach has a paid car park, around €3-5/day.

Ferries

The main ferry port is Athinios, on the west coast about 8km south of Fira (15-minute drive down a winding road). High-speed catamarans to Piraeus take about 5 hours; slower ferries take 8-9 hours. Several crossings daily in summer. Connections to other Cyclades islands (Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Ios, Crete) are also frequent in summer. You can take your Sync car on any ferry from Athinios. Book car spaces well in advance for summer departures: Santorini is one of the busiest ferry hubs in Greece and space fills up fast. Note: the old port below Fira (reachable by cable car or donkeys) handles only day-trip boats and tenders from cruise ships, not car ferries.

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Santorini

Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or villa anywhere on the island. If you're flying in, Santorini Airport (JTR) is in the east of the island near Monolithos, about 6km from Fira: pickup can be arranged at the airport right after landing. If you're arriving by ferry at Athinios port, your host can meet you there as you come off the boat. Both are common pickup points. Agree on the time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
