You need a valid EU driving licence to rent on Sync. From outside the EU, most foreign licences work for up to 6 months — but get an International Driving Permit if yours isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic). Greek traffic police check these at roadside stops. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set their own minimum at 23 or 25 for specific cars. Check the listing before you book.
The road out of the airport feeds straight onto Attiki Odos, the ring motorway. It's well-maintained and clearly signed in English. That takes you into Athens, toward Piraeus, or onto the national road network heading south or north. Once off the motorway, central Athens gets tighter: narrow one-way streets, occasional potholes, lane markings that vanish. GPS is essential. Rush hour runs 8-10am and 6-8pm on routes into the city center. If you land mid-morning on a weekday, expect 30-40 extra minutes to get to Syntagma.
You'll hit a toll booth within 2km of leaving the airport. Attiki Odos charges €2.80 per entry point. Cash booths are at every toll; some hosts' cars have an e-pass transponder, so ask when you pick up. Heading into central Athens means 2-3 toll points on Attiki Odos, around €5-6 total. The Athens-Corinth motorway (E94) charges separately if you're going to the Peloponnese. Keep coins handy for the first booth.
There are petrol stations on the national road right after the airport exits. Open 24/7. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.80-2.10/litre, a bit higher in peak summer. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level, usually full. Return it the same way. Renting an EV? Ask your host about the charging setup before pickup.
When you return the car at the end of your trip, most Sync hosts will meet you back at ATH. Agree on the time and meeting point when you pick up. If you need to park at the airport yourself while waiting: short-stay (P1, opposite Arrivals) costs around €3/hour. Long-stay lots P3 and P4 are €8-10/day. Don't leave the car in the drop-off zone — enforcement is active. In Athens city, central neighborhoods (Kolonaki, Syntagma, Monastiraki) have almost no free street parking. Paid garages run €2-4/hour.
The airport is well placed for both ferry ports. Rafina is 20 minutes north and connects to the Cyclades (Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros). Piraeus is about 40 minutes away and covers everything else: Santorini, Crete, Rhodes, the Saronic islands. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Pick the port based on your destination and head there directly.
Your host meets you at the Arrivals exit. No counter, no shuttle, no queue. Message your host when you land with your flight number and how long until you'll be out. They'll be at the meeting point outside baggage claim. The handover takes under 10 minutes. It's possible that your Host will ping you to pickup yourself with unlock instructions, without meeting them. If your flight is delayed your Host will know in advance, if you supply your flight number in the relevant field of your booking.
