Where does my host deliver the car in Kalymnos?

Most Sync hosts deliver to Pothia port (to meet you off the ferry), or to your hotel or accommodation anywhere on the island. Kalymnos has no commercial airport: the nearest is Kos Airport (KGS), 20km south by ferry. If you're flying into Kos and taking the Myrties-Mastichari crossing, note that crossing is passenger-only, so your host would meet you in Pothia after you arrive by the main Kos-Kalymnos ferry or at your accommodation. Agree on the exact time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.

For roughly 150 years, from the mid-19th century until synthetic sponges and a fungal blight in the late 20th century collapsed the natural sponge industry, Kalymnos was one of the most important sponge fishing centers in the Mediterranean. The fleet dived across the eastern Mediterranean and North African waters: Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, and the coasts of Turkey and Syria.

The human cost was severe. Before the introduction of diving suits (scaphandre) in the 1860s, divers descended using a heavy stone called a skandalopetra to a depth of up to 30 meters, holding their breath, and were hauled back up by rope. The introduction of the diving suit allowed deeper dives but created a new and poorly understood hazard: decompression sickness ("the bends"). Divers who ascended too fast after deep dives suffered joint pain, paralysis, and death. The cause wasn't understood for decades, and captains often pressured divers to ascend quickly to save time. Kalymnos lost hundreds of men to decompression illness. Many survivors were left permanently disabled, paralyzed, or partially deaf. The island has a disproportionate number of disability survivors relative to its population even by early 20th century accounts.

The social structure this created was distinctive. Women managed household finances, raised children, ran small businesses, and held the community together for the six months each year the men were away. The departure of the fleet each spring (Katavassia, around Easter) was a major ritual event: church blessings, songs specific to the occasion, women seeing off their men knowing some would not return. The return in autumn was equally significant.
The Nautical and Folklore Museum in Pothia documents this history in depth, with diving equipment, photographs, and personal accounts. The sponge shops along Pothia's waterfront still sell natural sponges (now imported from the Caribbean and elsewhere, since local stocks never fully recovered). Kalymnos became a significant climbing destination in the 1990s when climbers from Italy, France, and Germany began exploring the limestone cliffs above Massouri on the west coast. What they found was exceptional: compact, featured limestone with a high density of routes in a small area, mostly facing west (good afternoon shade), above a sea view, and with easy access directly from the road. The combination of rock quality, route density, accessibility, and the fact that you can climb in the morning and swim in the afternoon made it spread rapidly through the climbing community.

Today the island has over 3,000 established routes across more than 70 crags, covering every grade from beginner to world-class difficulty. The main climbing areas are concentrated on the west coast between Myrties and Massouri: Grande Grotta (an enormous overhang, some of the most famous hard routes in Europe), Odyssey (a long sector of varied routes for all levels), Poets (well-equipped moderate routes, good for beginners), and Spartacus. Most crags are within 5-10 minutes' walk from the road, and the car is useful for moving between sectors in the same day.

The climbing season peaks in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when temperatures are ideal. Summer is possible in the mornings but the limestone heats quickly. Winter is mild enough for climbing on good days. At peak season, Massouri fills with climbers from across Europe: the area has developed a small ecosystem of climbing-oriented accommodation, guiding services, and gear shops. If you're coming primarily to climb, you probably already know all this. If you're not a climber, the cliffs above Massouri are still worth seeing as a landscape: the scale of the limestone walls above the turquoise bay of Telendos is striking from the road.

Telendos is a small rocky island, about 5 sq km, sitting 300 meters off the Kalymnos coast at Myrties. It was connected to Kalymnos by land until a major earthquake in 554 AD separated it. The ruins of a Byzantine-era settlement are visible on the island's southern slopes, partly submerged in the shallow water at the channel edge.

Getting there is simple: small water taxis (caiques) run the 5-minute crossing from Myrties waterfront throughout the day and into the evening in summer. The last crossing back is usually around midnight in high season. No cars on Telendos: the island is entirely walkable, with a single main path along the shore and tracks up into the hillside.

Telendos has a handful of tavernas, a few small guesthouses, and a small beach. The main draw is the atmosphere: quiet, no road noise, excellent sunsets looking back toward Kalymnos and the limestone cliffs. The tavernas on the waterfront facing Kalymnos catch the late afternoon light directly. It's a very good dinner destination from Kalymnos: drive to Myrties, leave the car there, cross for two hours, have dinner watching the sunset, cross back.

There are also several beaches on Telendos reachable on foot (Hohlakas, Paradise beach), and the ruins of the early Christian basilica of Agios Vassilios are a short walk from the landing point. For anyone based in Myrties or Massouri, Telendos is an obvious evening without the car.
