A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Kalymnos is mountainous, with most of the usable land on the west coast and in the valleys running down from the central spine. The main road runs from Pothia (south) up the west coast through Myrties, Massouri, and Armeos to Arginonta (northwest), about 16km total. This road is paved and well-maintained, with sea views for most of its length. Drive time from Pothia to Myrties is about 20 minutes. The east coast road to Vathys (the deep inland valley/fjord, one of the most beautiful spots on the island) is paved for the full 10km from Pothia: the road drops into a narrow green valley of citrus groves, dramatically different from the dry limestone west coast. Worth doing slowly. The road to Emporios on the far north of the island is paved but narrow and winding, the most remote part of the island by road. The climbing area approach roads (to crags like Odyssey, Grande Grotta, and Poets) branch off the main west coast road and are short paved or good-quality gravel tracks. Kalymnos is a proper mountain island: some roads have significant gradients and tight bends. A standard car handles everything described above without difficulty.
No tolls anywhere on Kalymnos. All island roads are free.
Fuel stations in Pothia. Fill up there before heading up the west coast or out to Vathys: the rest of the island has no stations. The island is small enough that a full tank covers a full day's driving without concern. Unleaded 95 around €2.00-2.15/litre (island premium applies). Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Pothia has street parking around the harbor and in the town. It can be tight in the center near the ferry port on arrival days. Myrties and Massouri have informal parking along the coast road near the beach and climbing area access points. Vathys valley has parking at the village. No parking challenges worth planning around anywhere on the island.
Main ferry port is Pothia. Routes: direct overnight ferry from Piraeus (9-10 hours), and connections within the Dodecanese via the regular routes serving Kos, Rhodes, Leros, Patmos, and other islands. A smaller ferry runs frequently between Kalymnos (Myrties) and Mastichari on Kos, about 45 minutes: useful if you're connecting from or to Kos Airport (KGS). You can take your Sync car on the Piraeus route and on the larger Dodecanese inter-island ferries. The small Myrties-Mastichari crossing is a passenger boat only, no car transport. Book car space in advance for the Piraeus line in summer.
Most Sync hosts deliver to Pothia port (to meet you off the ferry), or to your hotel or accommodation anywhere on the island. Kalymnos has no commercial airport: the nearest is Kos Airport (KGS), 20km south by ferry. If you're flying into Kos and taking the Myrties-Mastichari crossing, note that crossing is passenger-only, so your host would meet you in Pothia after you arrive by the main Kos-Kalymnos ferry or at your accommodation. Agree on the exact time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
