Tips for renting and driving in Athens
Licence requirements
You need a valid EU driving licence to rent on Sync. If you're from outside the EU, most foreign licences work for up to 6 months - but get an International Driving Permit if yours isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic). Traffic police check these routinely. Minimum age is 21 on Sync, though some hosts set their own minimum at 23 or 25 for specific cars. Check the listing before you book.
Road conditions
Main arteries (Kifisias, Vouliagmenis, Messogion) are fine. Older neighborhoods are a different story: potholes, narrow one-way streets, lane markings that disappear mid-block. GPS is worth having. Google Maps and Waze handle Athens well with live traffic. Rush hour runs 8-10am and 6-8pm - routes into the center can add 30-40 minutes you weren't planning for.
Tolls
The main toll road is Attiki Odos, the ring road connecting the airport, northern Athens, and Piraeus. Cost is €2.80 per entry point, paid at cash booths or by transponder. Ask your host if the car has an e-pass - some do. No tolls inside the city. Heading to the Peloponnese, the Athens-Corinth motorway (E94) charges separately.
Fuel
Petrol stations are everywhere in Athens and on national road exits. Most city stations are open 24/7; suburban ones sometimes close by 10pm. Expect around €1.80-2.10/litre for 95 unleaded, a bit higher in summer. Renting an EV or hybrid? Ask your host about charging before pickup. Some Sync hosts include home charging or point you to the nearest fast charger.
Parking
Parking in central Athens is genuinely difficult. Kolonaki, Syntagma, Monastiraki, Psyrri - almost no free street parking. Paid garages charge €2-4/hour and are well signed. The Varvakeios market area and Omonia have public lots. If you're based further out (Glyfada, Kifisia, Marousi, Halandri), street parking is much easier. Riviera beach lots fill early on summer weekends.
Ferries
Piraeus, 15-20 minutes from the city center, connects to dozens of islands: Mykonos, Santorini, Crete, the Saronic Gulf islands. Rafina (45 min from the center, closer to the airport) covers the Cyclades and Evia. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Pick the port based on your destination. Parking near Piraeus port runs about €8-10/day.
