Tips for renting and driving in Chios

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Chios has a good paved road network covering the whole island. Chios Town to the Mastichochoria in the south (Pyrgi, Mesta) is about 25-30km, roughly 35-40 minutes. Chios Town to Nea Moni monastery in the center of the island is 15km, about 25 minutes on a winding mountain road. The north of the island around Volissos and Kardamyla is about 40-45km from Chios Town, about 50 minutes. Main roads are well-maintained. Mountain roads to Nea Moni and through the central range are paved but narrow and winding. The Mastichochoria villages in the south have narrow lanes: park at the village edge and walk in. A standard car handles all routes without difficulty. The island's terrain varies: the north is mountainous and dramatic, the center has a limestone plateau, the south is where the mastic trees grow on lower, drier hillsides. All zones are worth exploring and all are reachable on standard roads.

Tolls

No tolls anywhere on Chios. All island roads are free. If you flew in via Athens and drove to the ferry port, tolls may apply on Attica motorways. On the island itself, no tolls at all.

Fuel

Good fuel availability in Chios Town. Stations also in Kardamyla in the north and near the Mastichochoria in the south. Fill up in Chios Town before longer trips to Volissos or Nea Moni. Unleaded 95 around €1.92-2.05/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Chios Town has a mix of paid and free parking around the port and center. The waterfront area has paid spots; free parking is available a short walk inland. In the Mastichochoria villages (Pyrgi, Mesta, Olympi), park at the designated areas at the village entrance and walk in: the medieval lanes are pedestrian-only. Nea Moni monastery has a free car park at the entrance. No parking challenges anywhere on the island outside the town center.

Ferries

Main ferry connection: Piraeus to Chios, about 8 hours overnight (standard car ferry). Ferries also connect Chios to Lesvos (Mytilini, about 3 hours north) and Samos (about 3 hours south), making a north Aegean island-hop possible with a car. The ferry to Turkey (Chios Town to Cesme, 30-45 minutes) is passenger-only: no car transport. It's a day-trip crossing; you'll need your passport. Day trips to Cesme are straightforward but note that driving your Greek-registered rental car into Turkey is not permitted. You can take your Sync car on all domestic Greek ferry routes from Chios. Book car space in advance for summer departures on the Piraeus line.
