Tips for renting and driving in Ioannina
Licence requirements
A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Road conditions
Ioannina is connected to the rest of Greece by the A2/Egnatia Odos motorway, one of the best roads in the country. Athens is about 440km southeast, roughly 4.5 hours. Thessaloniki is 270km northeast, about 3 hours. Both are on the Egnatia. The Zagori area north of Ioannina (40-60km) involves mountain roads: paved throughout but winding and narrow in places, particularly on the village approach roads. A standard car handles all of it in dry conditions. In winter, snow is possible on the Zagori roads from November to March. The road to Dodoni (22km south) and the Tzoumerka mountains further east are also mountain standard. Parga on the coast (100km southwest) is reached via good regional roads, about 1.5 hours. The Igoumenitsa ferry port is 100km west, about 1 hour on the Egnatia.
Tolls
Tolls apply on the A2/Egnatia Odos if you're arriving from or heading to Thessaloniki or Athens. The toll stations are spaced across the motorway, with typical sections costing €1.50-3.00 each. No tolls within Ioannina or on the regional roads to Zagori, Dodoni, Parga, or Igoumenitsa.
Fuel
Good fuel availability throughout Ioannina. Fill up before heading into Zagori: the villages have no petrol stations. The last reliable station before the gorge area is in Konitsa (45km north) or Asprangeli at the Zagori entrance. Unleaded 95 around €1.90-2.05/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Parking
Parking in central Ioannina is a mix of paid street parking and free zones a short walk from the lakefront. The Kastro (castle) area has parking at its entrance on the landward side. For the lakeside promenade (Molos), street parking nearby fills up on summer evenings. In Zagori villages, parking is at the village entrance. The Vikos Gorge viewpoint at Oxia has a car park (dirt surface, free). Monodendri village is the main trailhead and has parking at the edge of the village. No parking challenges anywhere that a standard car can reach.
Ferries
There is a small boat service from Ioannina's lakefront to the island (Nisi) in the middle of Lake Pamvotis: departures roughly every 30 minutes, journey 10 minutes, fare about €2 each way. This is a passenger-only boat: no cars on the island, and none are needed. Leave your car on the mainland and walk. The nearest car ferry port is Igoumenitsa, 100km west, about 1 hour. Igoumenitsa has frequent ferries to Corfu (45 min), Brindisi, Bari, Ancona, and Venice. You can take your Sync car on any of these ferries and travel wherever you want.
