A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Kastoria sits at 630m altitude in a mountain basin. The city itself is easy to drive around the lake perimeter (9km, about 15 minutes all the way around). The road into town from the north passes through the main commercial area and down to the peninsula. Key distances: Florina 60km north, about 50 minutes on a good mountain road. Thessaloniki 220km east via Kozani, about 2.5 hours. Kozani 55km southeast, about 50 minutes. The Vitsi mountain ski resort is about 20km north of Kastoria, accessible on a paved road. In winter, snow is common in Kastoria and on the approach roads. The mountain roads toward Florina and the Vitsi area can require snow chains after heavy snowfall. Check conditions before driving in winter.
No tolls within Kastoria or on local roads around the lake and toward Vitsi. If you're driving from Thessaloniki on the A2/Egnatia Odos, tolls apply on that motorway. The final stretch from the Egnatia turnoff to Kastoria via Kozani is toll-free. All roads around the lake and into the immediate mountains are free.
Good fuel availability in Kastoria city. Fill up before heading to Vitsi ski resort or toward Florina. Unleaded 95 around €1.90-2.05/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Kastoria has free and paid parking in the city center. The lakeside promenade area has some paid spots; free parking is easy a short walk away. The old town peninsula streets are narrow: park at the edge of the peninsula and walk into the old neighborhoods. The lake perimeter road has pulloffs for views. At Vitsi ski resort, free parking at the base. No parking challenges anywhere in the region.
Kastoria is an inland city with no ferry connection. The nearest ferry ports are Thessaloniki (220km east) with Aegean island connections, or Igoumenitsa (about 150km southwest) for Italy and Corfu routes. You can take your Sync car on any ferry from these ports and travel anywhere in Greece or internationally.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address in the city. Kastoria Airport (KSO) is about 8km north of the city center: pickup can be arranged there right after landing. If you're driving from Thessaloniki or arriving by bus, your host can meet you at your accommodation or the bus station. Agree on the exact time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
