Tips for renting and driving in Kefalonia

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Kefalonia is large: expect real distances. Argostoli to Fiskardo in the north is about 50km, roughly 1 hour. Argostoli to Myrtos Beach is 28km, about 35 minutes on a mountain road. Argostoli to Sami on the east coast is 25km, about 30 minutes. Argostoli to Skala in the southeast is 40km, about 45 minutes. The main roads connecting the capital to the coasts are paved and well-maintained. The road down to Myrtos Beach is steep and winding: the viewpoint above is spectacular, and the descent to the beach involves a series of tight switchbacks. Take it slowly. The road to Assos village descends steeply onto the peninsula; park above the village and walk down. Mountain roads across the interior (Ainos peak at 1,628m, the highest point in the Ionian islands) are paved but narrow. A standard car handles all main routes without difficulty. Some tracks to remote beaches require more ground clearance; check with your host before going off-road.

Tolls

No tolls anywhere on Kefalonia. All island roads are free. If you crossed from the mainland via Patras and the Rio-Antirrio bridge, the bridge toll is €13.50 per car. If you drove via Kyllini ferry, no bridge toll applies.

Fuel

Good fuel availability in Argostoli and Sami. Fuel stations also in Lixouri, Poros, and Skala. Fill up before heading to Fiskardo in the far north or to remote beaches: the north of the island has limited stations. Unleaded 95 around €1.90-2.05/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Argostoli has paid and free parking throughout the town. The main waterfront square has paid parking; free alternatives are a short walk away. Myrtos Beach has a large free car park at the top of the descent. It fills by 10am in August. Arrive early or visit after 5pm. The viewpoint above the beach has a separate small pulloff. Fiskardo village has limited parking: a car park at the entrance to the village, then walk in on foot. The village lanes are too narrow for cars. Assos: park above the village on the main road and descend on foot. Melissani Lake: dedicated car park at the site entrance, free.

Ferries

Kefalonia has several ferry entry points. The main ones: Sami on the east coast has ferries to Patras (2.5-3 hours) and Italy (Brindisi, Bari, Ancona, via Patras or direct). Poros in the southeast has ferries to Kyllini on the Peloponnese (1.5 hours). Pessada in the south has a seasonal ferry to Zakynthos (1 hour). You can take your Sync car on all these routes. If you want to combine Kefalonia with Zakynthos, the Pessada-Agios Nikolaos crossing (seasonal, typically May-October) is the most direct: 1 hour with your car. Book in advance in July-August, vehicle decks fill up. Ithaca is a 30-minute ferry from Sami and a short ferry from Fiscardo in the north: both are passenger ferries, no car transport to Ithaca.

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Kefalonia

Most Sync hosts deliver to your accommodation in Argostoli or to Kefalonia Airport (EFL), which is 9km south of Argostoli. If you're arriving by ferry at Sami or Poros, your host can meet you at the port: agree on the location when you book since Sami and Poros are on different sides of the island from Argostoli. Confirm the exact time and pickup point before arrival. Your host will be in touch to confirm.
