A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Kilkis sits on hilly terrain but the surrounding area is a mix of gentle hills and the flat Axios river valley to the west. The city itself is easy to navigate. Key distances: Thessaloniki 45km south, about 40 minutes on the E79 national road. Lake Doirani 25km northwest, about 25 minutes on local roads. The Axios Delta national park entrance 30km southwest, about 30 minutes. Gevgelija (North Macedonia border crossing) 30km north, about 30 minutes. Roads in all directions are paved and in good condition. The road to Doirani passes through flat agricultural land. No mountain driving required for any of the main day-trip destinations from Kilkis.
No tolls on the roads between Kilkis and Thessaloniki via the E79 national road. If you use the A1/E75 motorway for part of the trip, tolls apply. Local roads to Doirani and the Axios Delta are free.
Good fuel availability in Kilkis city and on the road south toward Thessaloniki. Unleaded 95 around €1.85-2.00/litre. No fuel concerns for day trips in the region. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Kilkis city center has free and paid street parking. The city is small and parking is not a challenge. Free parking is available throughout most of the city. At Lake Doirani, free informal parking at the lakeside villages of Doirani and Ag. Petros. At the Axios Delta visitor center, free car park. No paid parking at any of the natural sites in the region.
Kilkis is an inland city with no ferry connection. The nearest ferry port is Thessaloniki, 45km south, with connections to several Aegean islands including Limnos, Lesvos, Chios, and Ikaria, though Thessaloniki's ferry service is less frequent than Piraeus. You can take your Sync car on any ferry from Thessaloniki and travel anywhere in Greece.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address in the city. Kilkis has no commercial airport. The nearest is Thessaloniki International Airport "Makedonia" (SKG), about 45km south: your host can arrange pickup there, or you can travel to Kilkis and receive the car at your accommodation. If you're arriving by bus, Kilkis has a KTEL station with connections to Thessaloniki. Agree on the exact time and location when you book.
