Tips for renting and driving in Kos

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Kos Town to Tigaki on the north coast is 13km, about 15 minutes. Kos Town to Kardamena on the south coast is 26km, about 30 minutes. Kos Town to Kefalos at the far southwest is 43km, about 45 minutes. All main roads are paved. The central spine road running southwest is easy and fast. The north coast road is straight and flat. The south coast has a few more curves once you get past Kardamena toward Paradise Beach and Kefalos. The interior mountain road up toward the Dikeos massif (passing through Zia village) is winding but fully paved: Zia is 15km from Kos Town, about 20 minutes. Bikes are everywhere in Kos, especially on the coastal paths and the main town area: give them space and expect them to be slow on the main road shoulders.

Tolls

No tolls anywhere on Kos. All island roads are free.

Fuel

Petrol stations in Kos Town and in Antimachia village in the center of the island. If you're heading to Kefalos or the far southwest, fill up in Antimachia. Unleaded 95 around €1.95-2.15/litre on the island. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Kos Town has paid parking near the port and the castle, around €1/hour. Free parking is available a short walk from the center. The old town area closest to the Hippocrates Plane Tree and the castle gets congested in summer afternoons. Asklepion archaeological site (4km from Kos Town) has a free car park at the entrance. Tigaki and Marmari beaches on the north coast have free roadside parking. South coast beaches (Paradise, Camel, Exotic) have small free lots or roadside parking. Zia village in the mountains has limited parking at the entrance, more cars than spaces in summer evenings when people go for the sunset view.

Ferries

The ferry port is in Kos Town. Main connections: Piraeus (overnight ferry about 12 hours, fast ferry about 7 hours), Rhodes (1.5-2 hours, several daily in summer), Kalymnos (45 minutes), Leros, Patmos, and other Dodecanese islands. There are also daily ferry crossings to Bodrum, Turkey (about 1 hour each way), operated as day-trip excursions: passports required, car transport not available on the Bodrum crossing. You can take your Sync car on Greek domestic ferries from Kos to any destination in Greece. Book car spaces in advance for summer departures to Piraeus and Rhodes.

Frequently asked questions about car rental in Kos

Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or accommodation anywhere on the island. If you're flying in, Kos Island International Airport "Hippocrates" (KGS) is about 25km southwest of Kos Town near Antimachia: pickup can be arranged at the airport right after landing. If you're arriving by ferry, the port is in the center of Kos Town and your host can meet you there as you come off the boat. Agree on the time and location when you book.
