A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Naxos Town to Agios Prokopios beach on the west coast is 8km, about 10 minutes. Naxos Town to Halki village in the interior is 17km, about 25 minutes. Naxos Town to Apiranthos in the east is 27km, about 35 minutes. All main roads are paved. The west coast beach road running south from Naxos Town through Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, and Plaka is smooth and easy. The interior mountain roads to Halki, Filoti, and Apiranthos wind through marble-rich hills: fully paved, manageable in a standard car, and genuinely scenic. The southernmost beaches (Pyrgaki, Agiassos) involve a longer drive and the last few kilometres get narrower. The north of the island toward Apollonas has a good paved coastal road. Some tracks leading to remote beaches are unpaved: a standard car is fine for 95% of the island.
No tolls anywhere on Naxos. All island roads are free.
Petrol stations in Naxos Town and in Halki village in the interior. If you're heading south toward Pyrgaki or north toward Apollonas, fill up in Naxos Town before you leave. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.95-2.15/litre on the island. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Naxos Town has a free car park just south of the port, a 5-minute walk to the Portara and the old town. The old town (Kastro) streets are too narrow for cars: park here and walk. Free parking is easy along the beach road south of town. West coast beaches (Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka) have free roadside parking, though the popular spots fill by 11am in August. Interior villages like Halki and Apiranthos have small central squares with informal parking. Apollonas in the north has a free lot by the beach. The unfinished Kouros statue at Apollonas and the one near Melanes both have small free car parks.
The ferry port is in Naxos Town, right in the center. Naxos is one of the best-connected islands in the Cyclades: multiple daily connections to Piraeus (fast ferry about 3.5 hours, slow overnight about 5.5 hours), and regular connections to Paros (45 minutes), Mykonos, Santorini, Ios, and Amorgos. Naxos sits on the main Cyclades ferry route, so you can island-hop in either direction easily. You can take your Sync car on any ferry. Book car spaces in advance for summer departures. The Small Cyclades islands (Koufonisia, Schinoussa, Iraklia, Donoussa) are reachable by smaller ferry from Naxos but are too small for cars: those are foot-passenger day trips.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or accommodation anywhere on the island. If you're flying in, Naxos Airport (JNX) is about 2km south of Naxos Town: pickup can be arranged right at the airport after landing. If you're arriving by ferry, the port is in the center of Naxos Town and your host can meet you there as you come off the boat. Agree on the time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
