A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Patra sits at the western end of the A8/Ionian Motorway and the E65 connecting to Athens (215km east, about 2 hours on the motorway). The Rio-Antirrio bridge just north of the city crosses the Gulf of Corinth to connect the Peloponnese to central Greece and the Ionian Motorway continuing toward Ioannina and the northwest. City roads are urban standard, with the complication of a steeply terraced hillside layout: the city rises from the port in tiers, and cross streets heading uphill can be steep. The port area and the central grid below the castle are straightforward. Traffic around the port is heavy when ferries arrive and depart. Key day-trip distances: Ancient Olympia 100km southeast, about 1 hour 20 minutes via the E55. Kalavrita 75km south, about 1 hour 15 minutes (the Vouraikos Gorge road from Diakopto is the scenic approach; from Patra you can go via Aigio and join the gorge road there). Nafplio 175km east, about 2 hours via Corinth.
The Rio-Antirrio bridge toll is €13.50 per car, paid at the toll booth on the Antirrio (mainland) side when crossing northbound, or on the Rio (Patra) side when crossing southbound. This is the main toll cost associated with Patra. The A8/E65 motorway toward Athens has several toll stations: expect to pay around €10-12 in total tolls for the full Patra-Athens run. No tolls on the E55 toward Pyrgos and Olympia, or on the road south toward Kalavrita.
Good fuel availability throughout Patra and on the main motorway approaches. Fill up in the city before heading south toward Kalavrita or west along the coast: stations become sparse on the mountain roads above Diakopto. Unleaded 95 around €1.88-2.00/litre, close to mainland average. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Patra has paid parking in the city center and along the waterfront. The port area has designated parking for ferry passengers, with rates by the hour. Free parking is available in the upper residential parts of the city, a short drive or uphill walk from the center. The castle area at the top of the city has free parking adjacent. During carnival season (January-February), the main parade routes are closed to traffic and central parking becomes difficult. Plan to park in the upper city or outer neighborhoods and walk to the parade route.
Patra is the main gateway between Greece and Italy. Multiple daily departures to Brindisi (8-9 hours overnight), Bari (14-16 hours), Ancona (19-21 hours), and Venice (30+ hours). The main ferry companies operating these routes include Anek Lines, Superfast Ferries, Grimaldi, and Minoan Lines. You can take your Sync car on all these international routes. Booking in advance is strongly recommended, especially in July-August when the Italy routes fill up with summer travelers. Domestic routes from Patra include ferries to Kefalonia (Sami, 2.5-3 hours) and Ithaca. For Corfu and Igoumenitsa, it's faster to cross the Rio-Antirrio bridge and drive to Igoumenitsa than to take a direct ferry from Patra.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address in the city. If you're arriving by ferry from Italy, your host can meet you at the port after you disembark: agree on the exact location (the port is large, with multiple terminals) and time when you book. The nearest airport with meaningful scheduled service is Athens International, 215km east; if flying in, arrange delivery to your Athens pickup point or plan to travel to Patra by road first. Your host will confirm pickup details before arrival.
