Tips for renting and driving in Preveza
Licence requirements
A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Road conditions
Preveza city is compact and flat. The Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel (toll) connects the city to the Aktion peninsula and the airport, about 5 minutes through the tunnel. Without the tunnel, the drive around the gulf is much longer. Key distances from Preveza: Nikopolis ancient site 7km north, about 10 minutes. Lefkada 20km south via the Aktion peninsula and the floating bridge, about 25 minutes. Parga 50km north on a coastal road with some winding sections through Epirus hills, about 55 minutes. Arta 40km east through the Ambracian Gulf flatlands, about 40 minutes. Igoumenitsa 90km northwest, about 1.5 hours on the Ionian Motorway. Roads in the area are generally good. The coastal road north toward Parga has scenic stretches but narrows in places.
Tolls
The Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel has a toll of around €3 each way. This is the practical route to and from the airport and to reach Lefkada. If you're driving on the Ionian Motorway (E55) toward Igoumenitsa or south toward Vonitsa and Antirrio, expect motorway tolls of €4-8 depending on the stretch. Local roads around the city and north toward Nikopolis and Parga have no tolls.
Fuel
Several petrol stations in Preveza and on the Aktion peninsula near the airport. Unleaded 95 around €1.88-2.05/litre. Fill up in Preveza before longer trips toward Parga or into the Epirus interior. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Parking
Preveza city center has free and paid street parking, around €0.80-1/hour in the busiest areas near the waterfront. The city is small enough that parking is rarely a serious problem. Free parking is available a short walk from the center. At Nikopolis, free parking at the archaeological site entrance. At Parga, parking is at the entrance to the town (paid in summer, around €3-5/day) as the old town streets are narrow. Beach areas around the Ambracian Gulf have free informal parking.
Ferries
Preveza has no car ferry connection of its own. The Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel handles the crossing between the two sides of the gulf mouth by road. The nearest ferry ports are Igoumenitsa (90km northwest), with international routes to Italy (Brindisi, Bari, Ancona, Venice) and connections to Corfu; and Patras (about 3 hours south via the Ionian Motorway), with Italy routes and connections to Kefalonia and Zakynthos. You can take your Sync car on any of these ferries and travel anywhere in Greece.

If you're flying in, Aktion National Airport (PVK) is on the Aktion peninsula across the tunnel from Preveza city, about 10 minutes by car through the undersea tunnel. Pickup can be arranged at the airport right after landing. Note that PVK also serves Lefkada visitors, so the airport is busier than the small city of Preveza might suggest. Agree on the exact time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
