Pythagoras (around 570 BC) is the most familiar: the theorem bearing his name (in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides) was almost certainly known before him, but he or his school formalized and proved it. More significantly, Pythagoras founded a philosophical movement that treated numbers as the fundamental reality underlying all things, an idea that influenced Plato and runs through Western philosophy and science to this day. He was born in Samos but spent much of his life in southern Italy. Pythagoreio (the ancient capital of Samos, now the harbor town on the south coast) is named after him.

Aristarchus (around 310 BC) is less famous but arguably more important: he was the first person to propose that the Earth orbits the Sun rather than the other way around, nearly 1,800 years before Copernicus. He also estimated the relative distances of the Earth to the Moon and Sun using geometry, getting the ratios roughly right with the naked-eye observations available to him. His heliocentric model was largely rejected in antiquity, overshadowed by Ptolemy's Earth-centered system that dominated for 1,500 years.

Epicurus (341 BC, born on Samos though his parents were Athenian settlers) founded the philosophical school of Epicureanism: the idea that the highest good is pleasure, specifically tranquility and freedom from pain and fear, achieved through simple living, friendship, and philosophical reflection. The Eupalinos Tunnel (Eupalinian Aqueduct) was built around 550-524 BC by the engineer Eupalinos of Megara, commissioned by Polycrates, the tyrant of Samos. It is 1,036 meters long, cut through Mount Kastro above Pythagoreio, and was designed to bring fresh water from a spring on the north side of the mountain to the ancient city on the south side. It is one of the major engineering achievements of the ancient world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The remarkable thing is that construction started simultaneously from both ends of the mountain, with two separate teams digging toward each other through solid rock. They met in the middle. The alignment error was less than a few meters horizontally and less than a meter vertically over 1,036 meters of blind digging through rock. How Eupalinos achieved this is a matter of scholarly debate: the prevailing theory is that he used surveying instruments to establish a common horizontal reference line around the mountain, and then calculated the geometry of the approach angles precisely enough to guarantee the tunnels would intersect.

The tunnel is now partially accessible to visitors: you can walk into it for about 100 meters from the south entrance, see the original carved water channel at the bottom of the tunnel floor, and get a sense of the scale. The full tunnel is narrow (2 meters high in places, less in others) and the deep water channel below the walking surface was the actual aqueduct. The site is above Pythagoreio, about 2km from the harbor, with a small car park at the entrance. Entrance fee around €6. Allow 45 minutes to an hour including the walk up from the car park.

Samos wine (also called Muscat of Samos) is a sweet white wine made from the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grape, grown on the terraced hillsides of the island. It has been produced here for at least 2,500 years, mentioned by ancient writers and traded across the ancient Mediterranean. Today it carries a Protected Designation of Origin and is produced by the Union of Vinicultural Cooperatives of Samos (EOSS), the single cooperative that controls all wine production on the island.

The wine comes in several styles: Samos Vin Doux (the classic sweet style, golden-amber, aged in oak), Samos Nectar (made from sun-dried grapes, darker and more concentrated, rich and almost raisin-like), Samos Anthemis (late-harvest, very sweet, aged for years in barrels), and a dry Muscat style for those who want the grape's aromatics without the sweetness. The sweet styles pair well with desserts, strong cheeses, and are good chilled on their own.

The cooperative's main winery and shop is in Malagari, about 3km from Samos Town toward the airport, with tastings and direct purchase. The winery also has a small museum covering the history of wine production on the island. Most tavernas on Samos carry the local wine; ordering "Samos wine" will get you the sweet style by default. If you want the dry version, ask specifically.

The island's wine terraces are most visible on the north and east-facing slopes around Vathy and Karlovasi. The harvest is in late August and September; if you're visiting then, you may see the grapes being brought in.
