Tips for renting and driving in Samos

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Samos has a good paved road network around the full perimeter of the island and into the interior. The main coast road links Samos Town (Vathy) on the northeast with Karlovasi on the northwest (about 35km, 45 minutes) and Pythagoreio on the south coast (14km from Vathy, about 20 minutes). Driving the full perimeter takes about 2-2.5 hours without stops. The interior mountain roads to villages like Manolates, Vourliotes, and Platanos are paved but narrow and winding, with steep gradients in places. The Kerkis mountain area in the southwest is the most dramatic terrain: roads here are narrower and the approach to the Zoodochos Pigi monastery involves a rough final section. A standard car handles all main perimeter and village roads without difficulty. The island is greener and more forested than most Aegean islands, with pine and olive trees throughout. The north coast tends to be calmer for swimming; the south coast has more exposed beaches. Both coasts are easily reachable by road.

Tolls

No tolls anywhere on Samos. All island roads are free.

Fuel

Fuel stations in Samos Town (Vathy), Karlovasi, and Pythagoreio. Fill up before heading into the Kerkis mountain area or the more remote southwestern villages: stations are sparse away from the main towns. Unleaded 95 around €1.93-2.06/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Samos Town (Vathy) has free and paid parking along the waterfront and in the town. Pythagoreio has parking at the edge of the harbor village; the center lanes are narrow. Karlovasi has easy street parking. At the Heraion archaeological site, free car park at the entrance. At the Eupalinos Tunnel, small free car park near the entrance above Pythagoreio. Interior villages like Manolates have parking at the village approach: the village lanes are too narrow for cars. No parking challenges anywhere on the island.

Ferries

Main ferry connections: Piraeus to Samos (Vathy), about 12-13 hours overnight on standard ferry. Ferries also connect Samos to Chios (3 hours north) and Ikaria (1.5 hours west), and seasonally to other Aegean islands. The ferry to Turkey (Samos to Kusadasi, 1-1.5 hours) is passenger-only: no car transport. Kusadasi is the port for ancient Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean. Day trips are straightforward: passport required, ferries run daily in summer. Driving a Greek-registered rental car into Turkey is not permitted. You can take your Sync car on all domestic Greek ferry routes from Samos. Book car space in advance for summer departures on the Piraeus line.
