Tips for renting and driving in Serifos

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Serifos is small and hilly, with a road network that reaches most parts of the island on paved roads. The main paved road runs from Livadi (port) up to Chora (6km, about 15 minutes, steep with hairpin bends) and continues north through the island's interior toward Galani and Kentarchos. A second paved road runs south from Livadi toward Psili Ammos beach. Several of the better beaches require short unpaved tracks: Agios Sostis on the north coast (dirt track from the main road, about 1.5km), Lia and Vagia on the northwest (accessible by dirt track). Ganema beach near Livadi has a paved approach. Sykamia on the far north is reachable by a rough track that requires a high-clearance vehicle: check with your host before attempting it in a standard car. The hairpin road up to Chora is the only part of the island's road network that requires real attention: it is narrow, steep, and the view over the bay is distracting in the best way. Take it slowly, especially if meeting traffic coming down. Once on the plateau above, roads flatten considerably. The island is rocky and largely treeless at higher elevations: the bare granite landscape with scattered thyme, wild sage, and broom gives Serifos a spare beauty that photographs well but can feel exposed in strong north winds (the meltemi in summer).

Tolls

No tolls anywhere on Serifos. All island roads are free.

Fuel

One fuel station in Livadi. Fill up there before setting out: there is nothing elsewhere on the island. The island is small enough that a single fill covers two or three full days of beach-hopping without concern. Check station hours if arriving on a late evening ferry. Unleaded 95 around €2.05-2.20/litre (remote island premium applies). Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Livadi has parking along the port waterfront and the beach road. Chora has a small car park at the village entrance, below the main staircase: leave the car there and walk up, the village lanes inside are not driveable. At beaches reached by dirt tracks, park at the end of the track. No parking difficulties anywhere on Serifos.

Ferries

All ferries use Livadi port. Main route: Piraeus to Serifos, 2.5 hours fast ferry or 4-5 hours standard. Serifos sits on the western Cyclades route that also serves Kythnos, Sifnos, and Milos, so island-hopping along this chain by ferry is straightforward. You can take your Sync car on the standard ferries serving Serifos. Some fast catamarans on this route are passenger-only: check vessel type when booking car space. Book in advance for summer weekends, when the Piraeus ferries fill quickly with Athenians making the short crossing
