A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Sifnos is small: the main road from Kamares port up to Apollonia (the capital) is 5km, about 10 minutes. From Apollonia, roads branch out to Kastro (3km east), Faros and Chryssopigi (6km south), Platis Gialos beach (8km south), and Vathi on the southwest coast (10km). Roads are paved throughout. The main Kamares-Apollonia road climbs steeply from the port: good surface, but winding. From Apollonia outward the roads become narrower as they reach villages and beaches. In the village centers, particularly Apollonia, Artemonas, and Kastro, lanes are tight and designed for pedestrians as much as cars. Park at the village edge and walk in. A standard car handles all paved routes without difficulty. No off-road required for any main attraction on the island.
No tolls anywhere on Sifnos. All island roads are free. If you drove to Piraeus from Athens on the Attiki Odos motorway, tolls apply on that road. On the island itself, no tolls at all.
There is a petrol station in Kamares and at least one near Apollonia. Given the island's small size, you won't need to fill up more than once during a stay. Unleaded 95 around €2.00-2.15/litre, typical island pricing. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Kamares has free parking near the port. Apollonia has a car park at the main entrance: leave the car here and walk into the pedestrianized center. Kastro has a small car park at the base of the hill; the village itself is pedestrian-only. Chryssopigi and Faros have informal parking near the beach access. Platis Gialos has a larger free car park above the beach. The island is small enough that you're never far from a parking spot. On peak August weekends, Platis Gialos and Chryssopigi can fill up by late morning: arrive by 9:30am or come in the evening.
Sifnos is served from Piraeus: about 3 hours on a high-speed ferry, 4.5-5 hours on a standard car ferry. Ferries also connect Sifnos to neighboring western Cyclades islands including Serifos (45 min), Milos (1 hour), and Kimolos. The route from Piraeus often continues through several islands, so Sifnos can be a stop on a western Cyclades island-hop. You can take your Sync car on standard car ferries to and from Sifnos. High-speed ferries (Flying Cat, Superjet type) don't carry vehicles. Book car space in advance in July-August. Vehicle decks on the Piraeus-western Cyclades routes fill up quickly on peak departure days
Most Sync hosts deliver to Kamares port when you arrive by ferry, or to your accommodation in Apollonia, Artemonas, Faros, or wherever you're staying. Since there's no airport on Sifnos, all arrivals are by ferry at Kamares: your host can meet you right at the port as you disembark. Confirm the exact time and pickup point when you book. Your host will be in touch before arrival.
