A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Skiathos has one main road running along the south coast from Skiathos Town west to Koukounaries, about 17km. This road is well-paved and handles all the main beach traffic. Every numbered beach on the island (there are over 60 beaches, many numbered on signs) is accessed from or near this road. The north side of the island has rougher tracks leading to quieter coves and up toward Kastro. A standard car handles the main road without any difficulty. Some tracks in the north require more ground clearance: check with your host if you plan to go off the main road. Traffic on the south coast road is very heavy in July and August, particularly between Skiathos Town and Koukounaries. Expect slow progress in peak summer afternoons. The road is narrow in sections and parking pulloffs fill up early at popular beaches.
No tolls anywhere on Skiathos. All island roads are free. If you drove to the ferry port in Volos or Agios Konstantinos, tolls may apply on the approach motorways. On the island itself, no tolls at all.
There are petrol stations in Skiathos Town. Fill up in town before heading west along the coast: there are no stations along the beach road to Koukounaries. Unleaded 95 around €1.95-2.10/litre on the island, slightly higher than mainland prices. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Parking in Skiathos Town is tight, especially in summer. The port area and main street fill up fast. Arrive early or use the paid car park near the port entrance. Along the beach road, each beach has a pulloff or informal car park. Koukounaries has a proper car park (free, but full by 10am in August). Lalaria beach has no road access at all: boats only. For popular beaches in peak summer, aim to arrive before 9:30am or after 5pm to find a space without a long walk. Kastro at the north tip has a small car park at the end of the road; the final stretch is a dirt track.
Skiathos is connected by ferry to Volos (about 2 hours), Agios Konstantinos (about 2.5 hours), and the neighboring islands of Skopelos and Alonissos. Ferries run frequently in summer, less so in winter. You can take your Sync car on ferries from Volos or Agios Konstantinos to Skiathos, and onward to Skopelos and Alonissos. Inter-island travel with a car opens up all three Sporades: Skiathos for beaches, Skopelos for hiking and villages, Alonissos for the National Marine Park. Book car space on the ferry in advance in July-August, as vehicle decks fill up faster than passenger seats.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your accommodation or the port in Skiathos Town. Skiathos Airport (SKS) is just 1km from the town center: pickup can be arranged right after landing, either at the terminal or your hotel if it's nearby. If you're arriving by ferry, your host can meet you at the port. Agree on the exact time and location when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
