A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Tinos has a good network of paved roads connecting all the main villages and beaches. The main road from Tinos Town north toward Pyrgos and Panormos is well-maintained. Roads to the interior villages (Volax, Tarampados, Ktikados) are paved but narrow and winding, often with stone walls close on both sides. Drive slowly in villages. The island is hilly: the central peak, Exombourgo, rises to 640m. Expect climbs and descents throughout. Kolymbithra beach in the north is a 25km drive from Tinos Town, about 35-40 minutes. Pyrgos village is about 28km, roughly the same time. Most roads are well-signed. Wind is a significant presence on Tinos, particularly on the northern and eastern sides: this doesn't affect driving but makes the north and east coasts feel rougher than the sheltered south and west.
No tolls anywhere on Tinos. All island roads are free. If you drove to the ferry port at Piraeus or Rafina, tolls may apply on the approach roads from Athens. On the island itself, no tolls at all.
Petrol stations in Tinos Town. There is also at least one station in the Falatados-Triantaros area in the center of the island. Fill up in Tinos Town before longer trips to the north or interior: the northern villages around Pyrgos and Panormos have no stations. Unleaded 95 around €1.95-2.10/litre on the island. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Tinos Town has paid parking near the port and free parking a short walk away. The area around the Church of Panagia Evangelistria is very congested on pilgrimage days (August 15 and March 25): arrive early or park at the edge of town and walk. In the villages, parking is at the village entrance since most lanes are too narrow for cars. At Kolymbithra beach, free parking in the dirt lot above the beach. At Pyrgos, park at the edge of the village and walk into the marble-carving center. Wind-exposed beaches in the north and east can have unsettled conditions for swimming even when parking and access are fine.
Tinos has no airport. Ferry is the only way to arrive. Main routes: Piraeus to Tinos (4-5 hours on standard ferry, about 2.5 hours on high-speed), Rafina to Tinos (about 3.5 hours standard, under 2 hours high-speed). Mykonos is a short hop from Tinos, about 30-45 minutes by ferry: easy day trip or island-hop stop. You can take your Sync car on standard ferries to and from Tinos. High-speed ferries often don't carry vehicles; check before booking if you need to bring a car. Book car ferry space in advance in July-August as vehicle decks fill up quickly, especially around August 15.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your accommodation in Tinos Town or the port. Since there's no airport on Tinos, arrivals are by ferry only: your host can meet you at the port when you disembark. If you're staying outside Tinos Town, agree on delivery to your accommodation or the nearest village. Confirm the exact time and location when you book. Your host will be in touch before arrival.
