Tips for renting and driving in Trikala

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Trikala sits on the flat Thessaly plain, so city and regional roads are straightforward. The drive to Kalambaka and Meteora (22km, about 25 minutes) is easy on a flat main road. The roads around Meteora itself are paved and maintained: the main loop road visits all six active monasteries and involves steep hairpin sections up to the monastery plateaus, but it's driveable in a standard car. The approach roads are narrow at points, particularly the final ascent to some monasteries. You won't need 4WD; you will need to take the curves slowly. If you're heading west toward Ioannina (about 160km, 2.5 hours), the E92 crosses the Pindos mountains through the Katara Pass (1,705m). This section has proper hairpin mountain road conditions: snow is possible October through April, with chains required or road closure in heavy snowfall. The Thessaly plain east of Trikala toward Larissa is entirely flat and uncomplicated. The E65 expressway connects Trikala toward the national highway network east. It is a modern dual carriageway.

Tolls

The E65 expressway toward Larissa has toll stations. From Trikala to Athens via the national highway expect roughly €15-20 in tolls total. The road to Kalambaka and Meteora has no tolls. Local roads in and around Trikala are free.

Fuel

Good fuel station coverage in Trikala city and on the main routes. Kalambaka has stations. Fill up before heading west into the Pindos mountains toward Ioannina: stations are sparse on the Katara Pass section and the road beyond. Unleaded 95 around €1.93-2.06/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way. GR

Parking

Trikala city has street parking and municipal car parks around the center. No significant parking challenges. At Meteora: each monastery has a small car park at its access road. These fill up by mid-morning in summer, particularly at the most visited monasteries (Great Meteoron, Varlaam). Arrive before 9am or after 4pm to avoid the worst congestion. The main road between monasteries is narrow enough that slow-moving coach traffic causes genuine bottlenecks midday. Driving the loop yourself gives you the flexibility to time visits around the crowds; the car park situation is manageable if you plan the sequence rather than following tour group timing.

Ferries

Trikala is inland, so no ferry connections from the city itself. The nearest ferry ports are Volos (80km east, with routes to the Sporades islands including Skiathos and Skopelos) and Igoumenitsa (about 220km west via the Katara Pass, with routes to Italy and Corfu). You can take your Sync car on ferry routes from either port. If combining a Trikala or Meteora visit with island time in the Sporades, Volos is the most practical onward connection.
