A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Andros has a good paved road network connecting the main towns and villages. The main axis runs roughly north-south, from Gavrio in the northwest through Batsi and across the island to Andros Town (Chora) on the east coast: about 35km end to end, roughly 45-50 minutes. The interior roads to villages like Apikia, Stenies, Mesaria, and Menites are paved but narrow, winding through terraced hillsides. Drive slowly in villages; lanes can be tight with stone walls close on both sides. The roads are generally well-signed. Some tracks to remote beaches are unpaved: check with your host before going off the main routes. Wind is a significant driving factor on Andros, particularly on exposed north-facing roads and coastal stretches. Strong meltemi (north wind) in July-August doesn't affect road conditions on main roads but can make exposed coastal areas feel rough. The island is greener and more temperate than most Cyclades, with water running in streams year-round in the interior.
No tolls anywhere on Andros. All island roads are free. If you drove to Rafina from Athens, there are no toll roads on the Rafina route from the city (unlike the Piraeus route which uses the Attiki Odos toll road). Rafina is about 30km northeast of Athens center via Mesogeion Avenue, toll-free.
Petrol stations in Gavrio and Batsi on the west coast, and in Andros Town (Chora) on the east. Fill up before heading into the interior villages or to remote beaches: the mountain and valley roads have no stations. Unleaded 95 around €1.95-2.10/litre on the island. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Gavrio port has free parking near the ferry terminal. Batsi has street parking in and around the village, mostly free. Andros Town (Chora) has a car park at the entrance to the old town: park here and walk in, since the pedestrianized center and narrow Venetian lanes don't allow cars. For interior villages like Apikia and Menites, park at the village edge and walk. Beach parking is informal at most spots: pulloffs and dirt areas near the road. No parking issues anywhere on the island.
Andros is served exclusively from Rafina port, not Piraeus. Rafina is 30km northeast of central Athens, about 35-40 minutes by car. Ferries run several times daily in summer: Rafina to Gavrio takes about 2 hours on a standard ferry. From Gavrio, ferries continue to Tinos (1 hour) and Mykonos (1.5-2 hours), making Andros a convenient first stop on a Cyclades island-hop from the mainland. You can take your Sync car on all Rafina ferries to Andros and onward to Tinos and Mykonos. Book car space in advance in July-August. Note: if you're based in Athens and want to take the car, Rafina departure is earlier and simpler than Piraeus for these islands.
Most Sync hosts deliver to Gavrio port when you arrive by ferry, or to your accommodation in Batsi, Andros Town, or elsewhere on the island. Since there's no airport on Andros, all arrivals are by ferry at Gavrio: your host can meet you right at the port as you disembark. Agree on the exact time and pickup point when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
