A valid EU driving licence works everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Police checkpoints are common on Crete's main roads, especially in summer. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before you book.
The north coast VOAK motorway from Heraklion toward Chania and Agios Nikolaos is fast and well-maintained. South of that, roads get narrower and more winding. The drive over the Psiloritis mountain range to the south coast is spectacular but takes longer than the distance suggests: expect 1-1.5 hours to reach Matala from Heraklion. Mountain roads to villages like Anogeia or the Lasithi Plateau are manageable but narrow in places. A regular car handles them fine. No 4WD needed unless you're going off-road.
Crete has no toll roads. You won't hit a single toll booth anywhere on the island, including on the main VOAK motorway along the north coast. Drive freely.
Petrol stations are plentiful in Heraklion and along the north coast road. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.85-2.10/litre. On the south coast and in mountain villages, stations are fewer: fill up before heading inland or south, especially on Sundays when some rural stations close. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Heraklion city center has paid parking zones, mostly around €1/hour at meters. The port area and Eleftherias Square fill up quickly in the evenings. Underground car parks near the city hall charge around €1.50-2/hour. At popular beach destinations on the south coast (Matala, Preveli), parking lots fill by mid-morning in July and August. Arrive before 10am or expect a walk from wherever you find a spot.
Heraklion port is one of Greece's busiest. Daily overnight ferries connect to Piraeus (Athens) in about 8-9 hours. Seasonal routes also run to Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Thessaloniki. You can take your Sync car on any ferry and travel anywhere in Greece. Car spaces on the Piraeus route fill up fast in summer: book in advance. The port is right in the city center, about 1km from Eleftherias Square.
Most Sync hosts in Heraklion deliver to your hotel, apartment, or any address in the city. If you're flying in, you can arrange pickup at Heraklion Airport (HER, also called Nikos Kazantzakis Airport) right after you land. Agree on the time and exact address when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
