A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Larissa sits on the Thessaly plain and the city itself is flat and easy to navigate. The road network radiating out is one of the best-connected in Greece: the E75 motorway links you north to Thessaloniki (about 150km, 1.5 hours) and south to Athens (about 330km, 3 hours). The A1/E75 is the main spine; well-maintained four-lane highway throughout. For day trips, the road to Meteora goes through Trikala (70km southwest, about 50 minutes). The Pelion peninsula road east via Volos (60km, about 45 minutes) winds once you get into the hills but is fully paved. The Vale of Tempi pass (30km north on E75) is dramatic gorge driving with the old road paralleling the motorway.
The A1/E75 motorway through Larissa has tolls. Athens to Larissa costs roughly €12-15 in total toll fees depending on entry and exit points. Larissa to Thessaloniki adds another €5-8. Toll booths are clearly marked. Keep some cash handy; most booths also accept cards. Within the city and on local roads, there are no tolls.
Plenty of petrol stations throughout Larissa and along the E75 motorway. Unleaded 95 runs around €1.85-2.00/litre. No fuel concerns for the city or for travel to nearby destinations. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Larissa has paid parking zones in the city center, around €1/hour. Street parking near the main square (Plateia Laou) and the ancient theatre gets busy during the day. Free parking is available a few blocks from the center. For day trips to Meteora, the monasteries each have small car parks (free). Kalambaka town at the base has larger free lots. For Pelion villages like Makrinitsa or Portaria, parking is at the village entrance and you walk in.
Larissa is an inland city with no ferry port. The nearest ports are Volos (60km east, about 45 minutes) with ferry connections to the Sporades islands: Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonissos. From Volos you can also reach Skyros via Kymi (on the Euboea coast, about 2 hours from Larissa). You can take your Sync car on any ferry from Volos and travel anywhere in Greece. Check schedules at the Volos port for the Sporades routes, as crossings are more frequent in summer.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address in the city. If you're flying into Larissa Airport (LRS), it's about 5km south of the city center and pickup can be arranged there right after landing. If you're arriving by train (Larissa has one of the busiest rail stations in Greece), your host can meet you at or near the station. Agree on the exact time and address when you book. Your host will confirm before arrival.
