A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.
Volos city is flat and easy. The Pelion peninsula begins immediately to the east and the road climbs quickly. Volos to Portaria is 13km, about 20 minutes. Volos to Makrinitsa is 17km, about 25 minutes. Volos to Tsagarada on the east coast is 53km, about 1 hour. Volos to Milies in the south is 41km, about 50 minutes. The Pelion mountain roads wind through dense chestnut and oak forest: beautiful and fully paved, but narrow in places with steep drops. Passing oncoming traffic on some sections requires pulling in. Some villages (Makrinitsa, Vyzitsa) have roads too narrow for cars past the village entrance: park at the designated lots and walk in. Damouchari beach on the east coast is reached by a narrow final descent: manageable but take it slowly. In winter, ice on the higher Pelion roads is possible; check conditions before heading up.
No tolls within Volos or on the Pelion peninsula roads. If you're driving from Athens on the E75/A1 motorway, expect toll costs of around €12-15 to reach Volos. From Larissa, no tolls on the local road (about €0 via the non-motorway route) or minimal on the E75 section. All Pelion mountain roads are free.
Good fuel availability in Volos. Petrol stations on the way up to Pelion in Portaria and Agios Ioannis. Fill up in Volos or Portaria before heading to the eastern Pelion coast or the south, as stations thin out considerably past the main ridge. Unleaded 95 around €1.90-2.05/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.
Volos city center has paid parking near the waterfront, around €1/hour. Free parking is easy a few blocks from the main strip. The port area can be busy when ferries are departing. On Pelion: Portaria and Makrinitsa have designated car parks at the village entrance (free) since the villages themselves are pedestrian. Tsagarada has a central square with some parking. Milies has a small free lot near the old train station. Agios Ioannis on the east coast has free roadside parking. Damouchari has very limited informal parking at the end of the approach road.
Volos is the main ferry hub for the Sporades islands. Regular departures from Volos port to Skiathos (about 1.5 hours by fast ferry), Skopelos (about 2.5 hours), and Alonissos (about 3.5 hours). Crossings are most frequent in summer. There are also some connections to Skyros via Kymi on the Euboea coast, though Skyros departures are more reliably handled from Kymi directly. You can take your Sync car on the Sporades ferries from Volos. Book car spaces in advance for summer crossings to Skiathos, which is the busiest route. Ferry tickets and schedules are available at the Volos port terminal.
Most Sync hosts deliver to your hotel or any address in the city. Volos has no commercial airport. The nearest airport is Nea Anchialos (NEA), about 20km south of the city: your host can arrange pickup there, or you can travel to Volos and receive the car at your accommodation. If you're arriving by ferry from the Sporades or by train (Volos has a rail connection to Larissa), your host can meet you at the port or station. Agree on the exact time and location when you book.
