Tips for renting and driving in Xanthi

Licence requirements

A valid EU driving licence is accepted everywhere. Non-EU visitors can drive on their home licence for up to 6 months in Greece. If your licence isn't in Latin script (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic), bring an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is 21. Some hosts set 23 or 25 for specific vehicles. Check the listing before booking.

Road conditions

Xanthi connects easily to the E90 / Egnatia Odos, the main east-west motorway crossing northern Greece from the Turkish border to Igoumenitsa. This makes Xanthi straightforward to reach by car from Thessaloniki (about 230km, 2.5 hours), Kavala (65km, 50 minutes), or Alexandroupoli (55km, 45 minutes). City roads are well-maintained. The old town has narrow lanes that are effectively pedestrian-only in the bazaar core: park at the edge of the old town and walk in. The new town around it is standard Greek urban road grid. The road south toward the coast (Porto Lagos, Lake Vistonida, 20km) is flat plain road, easy and fast. The road north into the Rhodope mountains is a different matter: it climbs steeply through forested terrain toward the Bulgarian border, with narrow winding sections. The road to Stavroupoli and the Nestos gorge (about 25km north) is paved throughout but requires careful driving on the tighter bends. Snow is possible on the higher mountain roads from November through March. Xanthi is a good base for day drives in multiple directions: south to the coast wetlands, north into Rhodope, west to the Nestos gorge, east toward Komotini and the Evros region.

Tolls

The Egnatia Odos motorway has toll stations on approaches to Xanthi. From Kavala to Xanthi expect around €3-4. From Thessaloniki to Xanthi via Egnatia, total tolls run roughly €8-12. Local roads in and around Xanthi are free, as are the mountain roads north toward the Rhodope and the coast roads south.

Fuel

Good fuel station coverage in Xanthi city and on the Egnatia Odos approaches. Fill up in Xanthi before heading north into the Rhodope mountains: stations are sparse above Stavroupoli. The coast road south to Porto Lagos and Vistonida has one station at the approach. Unleaded 95 around €1.90-2.05/litre. Your host hands over the car at a set fuel level. Return it the same way.

Parking

Xanthi city has street parking and municipal car parks in the new town. The old town has a car park at its entrance, near the clock tower: leave the car there and explore the bazaar and mansion quarter on foot. The lanes inside are too narrow for vehicles and the one-way system in the transitional zone is confusing. Parking in the new town near the university area can be tight during academic term time but is not a serious problem.

Ferries

Xanthi is inland, so no ferry connections from the city itself. The nearest ferry port for island connections is Kavala (65km west), with routes to Thassos (40 minutes), Limnos, Lesvos, and other North Aegean islands. Alexandroupoli (55km east) has ferry connections to Samothraki (2 hours). You can take your Sync car on ferry routes from both Kavala and Alexandroupoli. Kavala to Thassos is one of the most convenient car-ferry routes in northern Greece: frequent daily crossings, short journey, and Thassos is an easy day trip or overnight from Xanthi.
