Car Rental Insurance in Greece: What You’re Covered For and What You’re Not

Everything you need to know — without the fine print.

You arrive at the rental desk. Tired, in a hurry, suitcase still in hand. The agent shows you a screen full of acronyms — CDW, SCDW, TP, PAI — and asks: “Would you like full cover?” You say yes, because you don’t know what will happen if you say no. And suddenly the €29/day “deal” becomes €55.

If this has happened to you, you’re not alone. Insurance is the murkiest part of renting a car — designed to confuse you at exactly the moment you can’t think clearly.

This guide explains everything — in plain language, with no asterisks.

What “basic insurance” covers (and why it isn’t enough)

Every rental car in Greece must carry third-party liability insurance — meaning that if you hit someone else, their damage is covered. So far, so good.

The problem: basic insurance doesn’t cover damage to the car you’re driving. A scratch in the car park? That’s on you. A broken mirror? On you. Theft? Take a guess.

That’s why add-on cover packages exist. And that’s where the confusion starts.

CDW, SCDW, zero excess — what they really mean

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)

The most common type of cover. It reduces the amount you pay if the car is damaged — but doesn’t bring it down to zero. Depending on the company, you may still be liable for €500 to €1,500. This is called the “excess” or “deductible”.

SCDW (Super CDW)

Reduces your excess or brings it down to zero. Sounds ideal, but: a) it costs significantly more, b) it often excludes specific parts of the car, c) it may not cover tyres, the underbody, the windscreen or the interior.

TP (Theft Protection)

Covers theft or attempted theft — but here too there’s usually an excess. And it isn’t always included in CDW.

PAI (Personal Accident Insurance)

Covers bodily injury to you or your passengers. Important, but most of the time you’re already covered by travel insurance or private health insurance. It’s worth checking before you pay extra.

“What happens if…” — the scenarios you’re looking for

If you find a scratch in the car park

With basic CDW: you pay the excess (€500-€1,500). With SCDW or full cover: it depends on whether the damage falls under the exclusions. Many companies exclude damage to “specific areas” — areas that, as luck would have it, get hit most often.

If the mirror or windscreen breaks

Glass (windows, mirrors) isn’t covered by many CDW packages. Check before you book — or pay afterwards.

If you get a flat tyre or damage a wheel rim

Tyres and rims are almost always excluded, at every company. This is standard across the industry — it’s important to know.

If you have an accident

If it’s your fault: damage to your car is covered according to your package (basic CDW → you pay the excess; full cover → nothing or very little). If it’s not your fault: the other driver’s insurance covers your damage. Either way: report it immediately, take photos, and get a police report if anyone is injured.

The traps nobody tells you about

Let’s be honest. At traditional rental companies, insurance is designed as an upsell — not as protection. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth having, but you need to know what you’re buying.

Trap 1: The price you see isn’t the price you pay

The headline price almost never includes full cover. The “affordable” price draws you in — the insurance charges you later. At traditional companies, cover can raise the daily rate by 50-100%.

Trap 2: The fine print in the exclusions

Even “full” cover packages typically exclude: tyres and rims, the underbody, the car’s interior, damage from driving on dirt roads, and damage from driving under the influence of alcohol. The word “full” doesn’t mean what you think.

Trap 3: The hold on your card

Many companies block €500-€2,000 on your credit card as a deposit. If you don’t have a credit card (only a debit card), they may not even let you take the car — something you find out at the desk, not on the website.

How Sync does things

At Sync, we tackled this problem from the ground up: what would we want as drivers?

The answer: to know exactly what we’re covered for, how much it costs and what happens if we need it — before we hit “book”.

Sync Protection Plan

Every booking on Sync gives you the option to add a protection plan with clear terms:

Full damage cover, and you carry no liability. Zero. No guessing, no negotiating at the desk, no worrying about a mark on the bumper.

What changes in practice

You see the full cost before you book. The rental price + the protection price are shown clearly on the booking page — no surprises, no upsell at the desk.

You know what’s covered and what isn’t. No acronyms to decode. If something isn’t covered, we tell you — you don’t find out afterwards.

We don’t block any amount on your card as a deposit.

Checklist: what to check before you book anywhere

Wherever you rent from, here’s what you need to know before you hit “book”:

  1. What type of cover does the price include? (Basic third-party liability or something more?)
  2. How much is your excess if there’s damage?
  3. What’s excluded? (Tyres, glass, underbody, interior)
  4. Do you need a credit card, or do they also accept debit cards?
  5. Is a deposit blocked on your card? How much? When is it released?
  6. Are you already covered by travel insurance or your credit card?

If the company can’t give you clear answers to these 6 questions, that tells you something.

So, do you need insurance?

Yes. The question isn’t “whether” but “what exactly”. A scratch, a broken window or a minor accident can cost €300-€1,000+ without cover. Extra insurance is the price of your peace of mind — as long as you know what you’re buying.

And if you want to know all this before you reach the rental desk, maybe you don’t need a rental desk at all.
